He completed a comprehensive nine-month course in UCLA and became a licensed acupuncturist.
“Fifteen to 20 percent of my practice involves acupuncture,” said Larry Stephenson. “Ten to 15 percent of my acupuncture patients get cured, 15-20 percent don’t see much improvement and 60 percent or so experience relief but don’t get totally cured.”
Virginia has fewer than 200 licensed acupuncturists, said the doctor. Twothirds of the country’s acupuncturists are in California, he said.
Few insurance companies cover acupuncture, noted Larry Stephenson. “I think they should,” he said. “If they cover massages, hydrotherapies and physical therapies, why not acupuncture?”
